TerrainIn the area of competition, located in the region of Malcantone, we find all the major features of its landscape: forests, hills, meadows, villages with narrow streets and the church in the centre, rivers and streams in sometimes deep valleys.
The vegetation consists of copse woods of chestnut, oak, birch, ash, black locust or walnut. The streams that flow through the territory are bordered by slopes sometimes steep, covered with hardwood forests, with ash, alders and willows.
Four major hills surround the villages and the wide meadows, orchards and vineyards in the middle of the area of competition. All the most frequent features represented in an orienteering map are there; small depressions, re-entrants, depressions, trenches, earth walls, earth banks are to be met on the sides and on the flat heights of these hills, where there is no shortage of trails, forest roads and man-made features of various type, useful for immediate placement on the map. In general well navigable, especially in spring, the woods that will host the 2-day Ticino of Orienteering, will require a good physical condition on the slopes and constant attention to maintain the right elevation and the correct direction. In 2005 a selection test of the Swiss national team for the world championship in Japan was held in a part of this area. These terrains were chosen by their coaches especially for the characteristic of their contours, so similar to those in the areas of competition in Japan.
